Week 6 League Report

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Last night we finally got back on the fields for the first night of Spring ultimate.  Although the grounds showed the signs of a wet winter, the weather ensured a calm, warm (at least compared to the last few months) night.

Flinders Funk jumped over Flinders: The Mighty Hucks into 6th spot with their first official result of the season.  Otherwise, no teams changed places in Division 1 as all results went as expected, although maybe not quite the expected margins.

Division 2 Preview:

NAU (1st, 3-0, 72.4%).  NAU has been on a steady decline over the last year or two and this season marks the first on record where they have not featured in Division 1.  The past Division 1 experience, when combined with the generally good mix between spirit and competitiveness which will likely see NAU as one of the big players in Division 2.

Ultimate Evolution B (2nd, 3-1, 64.0%).  As a club, Ultimate Evolution could quite possibly have fielded 3 teams, had they recruited maybe one or two more girls.  Instead, they have fielded two large squads which are real chances of topping their divisions.  A large squad can mean a team can not gel on-field, however the consistently high numbers at Sunday morning trainings means this team will know how one another plays.

Flinders Uni 3 (3rd, 2-1, 58.6%).  Suffered throughout the qualification period with a lack of players and fill-ins left, right and centre.  The lack of players continued in Round 6, but they turned it around for a big win over previously undefeated Adelaide Uni AUG, although the strong fill-ins may have assisted this cause.  Hopefully the team can settle after the mid-season break in the lead up to finals, or they are unlikely to cause the leaders too many headaches.

Adelaide Uni AUG (4th, 2-1, 52.5%).  This team looked a chance at making Division 1 before a golden point loss in the final week to Flinders Funk.  Adelaide Uni has tons of new players coming through the ranks and this team is crucial to their club's development.  Like Flinders: The Mighty Hucks, this team is likely to come back from Perth with all guns firing.  With a number of experienced leaders also in this team, they are one of the favourites to take out the title.

Supafly-Catchers (5th, 1-3, 43.6%).  Like Adelaide Uni AUG, this team is very much full of the future Flycatcher stars with 4 players under 18 and another 4 playing in their first or second league.  Despite their lack of experience, they have staged a number of second half comebacks to fall just short of winning.  This team is extremely tall (with two obvious exceptions) and if the skills can pick up to take advantage of this strength then they will beat the top placed teams.

Ballmark Figures (6th, 1-3, 32.8%).  Now in their 3rd league together, Ballmark Figures have picked up two extra key leaders to fast-track the development of the team.  Already off to their best start for a season, they are no longer the easy-beats they once were, providing some mean defensive pressure.  This season they will be focusing on improving their offensive game and come season's end it will come together and one of the big teams will go home upset.

Flycatchers Mortein (7th, 0-3, 19.6%).  A team brimming with talent once earmarked as future Division 1 players, there appears to be a loss of enthusiasm and the know-how to win.  The team plays some good defence, but the serious lack of firepower on offence suggests this team is destined for a season at the foot of the ladder.
